Mission Activities

God has not called us to a life of comfort - he has called us to an adventure of mission!

Mission is the word we use to spread Jesus’ message of love and power both here in the community, and right around the globe - to meet the needs of a broken and hurting world.

Samaritan’s Purse

In CBC our core partner for overseas mission is Samaritan’s Purse. Samaritans Purse operates throughout the developing world with a number of special projects that CBC members take part in:

Operation Christmas Child

Perhaps the most well known of Samaritans Purse projects, over 1 million shoeboxes, full of christmas presents for needy children, are sent each year to countries that have been the victims or war, famine or desperate poverty. Belarus, Bosnia, Kenya, Kosova, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Montenegro, Mozambique, Romania, Serbia, Swaziland and the Ukraine all received boxes in 2011!

Donors from schools, voluntary groups, workplaces and churches cover a shoebox with Christmas wrapping paper, fill it with gifts (unwrapped), and send it to a collection depot. There Samaritans Purse volunteers (including many from CBC) check each box that it contains everything it needs to, package shoeboxes up into cartons, then pack articulated lorries to go off to wherever they’re needed in November and December.

The Dorset Collection Warehouse is based in Christchurch and run by Peter and Eileen Ivermee (Samaritan’s Purse Area Organisers). Contact them if you want to get involved.

Turn On The Tap

Imagine having to live with water that isn't actually safe to drink. Imagine having to walk four miles every day just to get it. Finally, imagine living in the knowledge that your child might be one of the 4,000 who die every day as a result of dirty water and poor sanitation.

That's the reality facing millions of families around our world, 1 in 8 of whom does not have access to clean, safe drinking water.

We at CBC think that is inexcusable, and are working to make a difference. Each year we hold a Turn On The Tap service to pray, raise awareness and raise money for relief projects, and several of us raise money during the year by doing sponsored walks, fundraising recitals and other activities.

Last year two CBC members, Ron Westwood and Barry Short went on a Samaritan’s Purse Discovery Team trip with other local Christians to work to bring clean safe drinking water to a rural village in Uganda. Find out more

Positive Impact

HIV & AIDS has not gone away. It’s not something that only affects the gay community either. It is now one of the biggest killers in the world, dwarfing all other plagues, natural disasters or terrorist attacks... ever.

In Sub-Saharan Africa the impact on households, communities, businesses, public services and national economies is enormous. In Swaziland, average life expectancy has been cut to 37 years. In 2008, more than 14.1 million children in sub-Saharan Africa were estimated to have lost one or both parents to AIDS. (statistics from UNAIDS)

But it's not unbeatable. By raising money through activities such CBC’s annual family picnic, we are making a positive impact on HIV and AIDS today.
